More and more people use mobile devices to access the World Wide Web, so the demand for mobile-friendly websites is steadily increasing. To fulfill this demand, the entity that administers the universal top-level domain name extensions, ICANN, established the dot MOBI extension in 2005. The first registrations were started in September 2006, and the concept behind this domain extension is that all websites that use it need to comply with special terms. In other words, all .MOBI websites need to be developed to be opened correctly by mobile devices in accordance with the so-called “MWI Best Practices for mobile content” formulated by the W3C Mobile Web Initiative (MWI) in collaboration with the dot MOBI Registry. These involve how a web page is being navigated, the way it is being displayed (form and size), etc.

The restrictions have induced some questions because the universal top-level domain is the only one that specifies what devices has to be able to access a website and the way in which this has to happen, breaking the so-called principles of device independence, according to which a website should be built in such a way as to be viewed by most Internet browsers and devices, be they mobile or stationary.

Considering that the .MOBI Registry does not offer domains directly, you can register a dot MOBI domain with any 3rd-party firm, such as ours.
